Where to start...

Going wayyyyyyy back.

After graduating from WLHS...and a very short summer, I attended the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD)...1963-1967.  Following a few years in various duty assignments on diesel-electric submarines (USS CUBERA, USS TRUMPETFISH) where I "Qualified in Submarines", I returned to academia for a four year Navy scholarship to Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio) to earn a MS and Ph.D. in Heat Transfer/Fluid Mechanics.  As payback for the academic time out and after qualifying in the naval nuclear power program (Bainbridge, MD; Windsor Locks, CT), I spent the next 15 years on sea duty on 5 fleet ballistic missile submarines (USS PATRICK HENRY, USS DANIEL BOONE, USS JAMES MONROE, USS HENRY L. STIMSON, and USS BENJAMIN FRANKLIN)... finally serving as Commanding Officer on the FRANKLIN.  Duty stations/home ports during this time included Groton, CT; Charleston, SC; Honolulu, HI; Vallejo, CA; Kittery, ME; and Norfolk, VA. Routine deployments from Guam, Holy Loch (Scotland), and St. Mary's (Kings Bay), GA rounded out my "homes away from home."  In 1988, after completing my 3rd submarine shipyard overhaul, I moved to the Washington, D.C. area for 9 years of program management assignments (ship signature management, combat systems, automation/crew reduction technologies, etc.), culminating with 4 1/2 years at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) developing advanced capabilities for submarines.   Finally, after 30 years in the submarine navy, I retired to work the civilian side of the problem for a while.

In 1997 I chose to start a second career at General Dyanmics Electric Boat Corporation in Groton, CT as a Staff Engineer.  Now, after 11 years, I have been able to continue working advanced technologies for applications to improve submarine capability/relevance and contributing directly to the newest of U.S. submarines... the VIRGINIA Class submarines.

It's been a heck of a ride...and Judy (Judy Peterson, WLHS Class of '64), 5 kids (Robert, Bradley, Jon, Kathrine, and Jodi) and countless pets have been along with me.
