Forty-five years is a
long time to account for ( ! ) so I'll just talk about now. I
live a couple blocks from the left coast with my husband of 40
years. While he is happy to read and putter, I like to be more
involved in the community. I work as a psychotherapist two days a
week, volunteer as a children's docent at a botanical garden and
take tai chi classes. Like many of you, I love gardening. I'm
creating a habitat garden of drought tolerant plants that are
attracting bees and butterflies, birds, lizards and frogs. I try to
keep myself grounded with meditation and study of Buddhism. And I
love walking and talking and playing with Susan. She and her
husband have a vacation house right across the street from us!
Our three kids are pretty well grown now and are happily living with
their partners as they embark on their careers as public defender,
neuroscientist and philosopher. We had a wedding last summer,
another this summer...and hope the third one takes his time! As
good friends with each other, and with Susan's daughter too, they
sometimes meet at our house for weekends. That's been a great
thing about living at the beach!
I worry about the health and well-being of the world, the earth
itself and all living creatures, and I often feel I should be more
of an activist. In a personal sense, though, I am enjoying this
chapter of life. The pressure is off in many ways. The kids are
raised. The insecurities are soothed. The careers are done. A lot
of the answers are in. Now is the time for the deepening
understanding and expanding awareness - before the losses of health
and loved ones takes over.
Susan and I will be there for the 50th reunion, God willing. Take
care 'til then!
